The first truly great Roman mausoleum, built by Augustus as a tomb for the Giulio-Claudian imperial dynasty. The monument was built in concrete and the roofs and terraces were covered with cipresso threes, like roman-etruscan tradition.

The first member of the family who was buried in was Marcello, the young nephiew of Augusto. it was later transformed into quarry, an amphitheatre and an auditorium.
