<  Castle of Pope Jilius II - Ostia Antica

This prototype of many other Italian castles was built to protect the mouth of the Tiber at the end of the 15th century by Sixtus IV and was later expanded by Julius II who added the towers, the courtyard, various apartments and a moat at the beginning of the 16th century.
